Professor Mick Dodson, Northern Territory Treaty Commissioner

Professor Mick Dodson, the first-ever Northern Territory Treaty Commissioner, will deliver the Garran Oration at the IPAA National Conference being held in Darwin on 26 September 2019.

The Garran Oration honours the memory of the first, and one of the greatest, of the Australian Commonwealth’s public servants, Sir Robert Garran GCMG QC (1867–1957).

Professor Dodson will be the fourth Aboriginal Australian to deliver the Garran Oration after Professor Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG (1991), Ms Pat Turner AM (1996) and Mr Noel Pearson (2014).

Professor Dodson’s 2019 Garran Oration comes at a significant time in Australia’s history, with the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, Minister for Indigenous Australians, announcing that he will develop and bring forward a consensus option for constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians to be put to a referendum in the current parliamentary term.
